A DRM-free version of the game was later released on GOG.com on June 2, 2017, followed by a release on on January 16, 2020. The game was released on Steam and at retail (Steam key) on October 19, 2010. The game shares much of its engine and assets with Fallout 3. The game is not a direct sequel to its predecessor Fallout 3, but follows events referenced in Fallout and Fallout 2 and features the return of elements from Fallout 2.
